Die Rakotzbrucke: Know The Dark Secret Story Hiding Behind the Illusionary Bridge of Kromlau!
Among the verdant foliage in Kromlau, Germany’s Kromlauer Park lies a delicately arched bridge, Rakotzbrücke, famously known as the Devil’s Bridge. It was built specifically to create a circle when it is reflected in the waters present beneath it.
Story behind The Devil's Bridge:
The curious travelers around the world came to enquire about the bridge and were satisfied with the dearth of mythological stories of the locals. It is stated that Friedrich, the knight built the bridge with the help of Satan in 1860.
The knight had a deadline for completing the project, but the time was not adequate. To complete the work within the deadline, he called the devil for help. The devil agreed to help him as long as the knight agreed that the first life to cross the bridge would be owned by Satan. Friedrich agreed to the simplest and gruesome term of the devil and received his help.
The story does not end here but goes on to state the devil was cheated by the workers. They ensured that the expectations and desires of the devil not be met and the first life to cross the bridge was a rooster or a goat.
The travellers were not superstitious and stated the entire bridge is made by the mortal hands, which includes the jagged, rocky spires present on either side of the bridge and the pointed rocks that are present in the lakes. While the bridge was created, its builders did seem to hold the aesthetics of the bridge in higher regard than its utility. The thin rock spires that were created on either side of the bridge is a spectacular view. The travellers state them to be naturally formed basalt columns. Besides the curvature of the bridge has been designed in such a manner that it is half of the perfect circle.
When the waters are still, and the light is right, it creates the illusion of a complete stone circle. The visitors must keep in mind that crossing it is strictly prohibited, in order to preserve it. As of 2018, the bridge has been under renovation and is surrounded by a fence to protect it.
Take a Trip to Devil's Bridge:
Driving is the most convenient way to get there. It is a drive of 165km from the capital, Berlin, and just takes a couple of hours to reach. You can also access the parking lot across the street from the park. Take a walk of 5 minutes from the parking lot, and you will reach the bridge.
You can also reach the place by public transportation. From Berlin take a train to Cottbus and then transfer to a second train to Weibwasser. Take bus 257 to Kromlau and the park is located just 1km walking distance.
It takes approximately three hours to get from Berlin to Kromlau. You can also take a flight to the closest cities of Dresden, Berlin or Leipzig and the rent a car to the park. If you have a photoholic and rustic personality, then the devil’s bridge should be on your list. Kromlau Park is filled with giant rhododendrons and azaleas, a beautiful place to visit in the spring. Autumn is the best season to visit the place as it adds myriad colors to the scene, making it more surreal.
